Putumayo proudly presents their newest gem Rhythm & Blues, adding to their successful American music series. With a company motto that boasts “guaranteed to make you feel good”, there’s no denying they’ve accomplished this. The moment you press play you begin a journey to another time and place. You’ll begin at the birthplace of New Orleans and travel amongst the rugged roots of blues and gospel, finishing with touches of reggae and jazz. As the first album Putumayo dedicated to this genre, they have nailed the combination of soul legends and rising stars of the retro R & B revival.
Rhythm and Blues succeeds in uniting all generation gaps, with a wide range of 60’s and 70’s R & B, 50’s gospel, and decade after decade of classic New Orleans. This collection is proof of how influential this genre became for future greats. R & B is becoming closely linked with modern day rap and hip hop artists. All are seeking to create the honesty and soulfulness of this genre.
It’s impossible to list all the impressive credentials each of these artists have brought to the table. The mix includes enormous career achievements, blended with chart topping hits. Among some my personal favourites is “Till Your Fool Comes Home” by James Hunter. This song will have you toe tapping, finger snapping, and swept away in the moment. It’s no surprise his raw talent was recognized by the likes of Van Morrison. Another great is “Wang Dang Doodle”, a defined classic written by the great Chicago-blues songwriter, producer, and bassist, Willie Dixon. Sam Moore, Angie Stone, and Keb’Mo’ re-create this great, adding their own personal flare. This song has great harmonica work, and is exactly what you want from the blues.
Putumayo has truly created a stellar mix of music for your soul. With a scheduled release date of February 9th/2010, you won’t want to miss this on. Alongside the 12 amazing tracks it comes complete with each artist’s bio and accomplishments.
