Carrie Newcomer's name can be deceiving, as she is hardly a newcomer to the world of folk music. The singer/songwriter is set to release her twelfth studio album, Before and After, on February 23, 2010.
This album flawlessly combines piano, violin, cello, mandolin, bass and drums with Newcomer's skillful guitar opus and powerful voice. Not only does she draw in the listener with her rich vocals and delicate melodies, but also with her reflective lyrics. The album presents Newcomer's musings about the world, allowing them to revel in the profound yet simplistic message throughout each track.
The songs transition seamlessly, offering a slightly similar sound from one track to the next, while each sheds light on a different situation in modern society. "I Meant to Do My Work Today" is easily relatable to any mature listener, as it reflects upon the never-ending obligations we face on a day-to-day basis in modern society. It easily exemplifies our fast paced world. The track "If Not Now" explores Newcomer's spiritual nature; the lyrics convey a persevering sense of hope as she sings, "Miracles do happen every shining now and then." Other note worthy songs on the disc include "Ghost Train", "Hush" and "I Wish I May, I Wish I Might."
The title track "Before and After" blends the use of strings, percussion, piano and guitar with the soothing combination of Newcomer's vocals and the back up vocals of Mary Chapin Carpenter. The song provides commentary on the paths we choose to take in life and the result following the journey. Newcomer utilizes profound metaphors throughout the chorus to provoke consideration of the meaning behind the message: "We live our lives from then until now / by the mercy received and marks on our brow / To my heart I'll collect what the four winds scatter / And frame my life into before and after."
Newcomer's Before and After is not about intricate composure or complicated notes; it's about a soulful delivery of the message. So keep your eyes and ears open for Newcomer's upcoming release and be sure to pick up a copy. She might just "Carrie" you away.
