“Alice in Wonderland” tells the tale of Alice (Mia Wasikowska) at the age of 19 as she prepares herself for the idea of marriage. After a young man proposes to her at a dinner party, Alice slips into Wonderland only to find it's complete chaos. Once Alice makes her way to a twisted tea party hosted by the Mad Hatter (Johnny Depp), she learns how The Red Queen (Helena Bonham Carter) has enslaved the creatures of Wonderland. Alice has to believe in herself in order to conquer her fears about her real life and the monsters waiting to destroy her in Wonderland to save her friends, all she needs is a little imagination.

Tim Burton’s enchanting interpretation of this classic children’s tale is powerful enough to capture an audience of any age, and makes a fantastic addition to the Alice series rather than re-telling the same story. Essentially the film is about how to test the limits of your imagination while dealing with the realities of growing up, mixed with a potent dose of Burton’s signature aesthetic style. The real success of “Alice in Wonderland” is how the film dives deeper into the classic characters within the story and how they’ve grown and developed since Alice’s last visit to Wonderland as a little girl. The film has a fantastic supporting cast including Crispin Glover as the Knave of Hearts and Alan Rickman as the hookah-smoking Caterpillar.

The 3D experience only served to enhance the rich textures of Tim Burton’s vivid flare for creating his own unique visual style and made it truly come to life on screen. At its core, “Alice in Wonderland” is about how people have the magic ability to make their dreams reality, and how our imaginations are a part of what makes us human. It’s uplifting to see the timeless characters in the film fly in new directions while Tim Burton turns this classic children’s story into a modern fairy tale made of pure magic.
