Finger
Still In Boxes 1990 – 1993

By Mike Bax

Back in the early nineties, Finger was making some ripples on the indi-rock scene as a Raleigh NC band with an ear for the sounds of Johnny Thunders. Merge records released their debut single ‘Everywhere’ / ‘The Awful Truth’ as one of the labels earliest catalog releases. Still In Boxes 1990 – 1993 captures the majority of their studio output onto a single disc and will be released later this year on Second Motion Records.

Finger toured around with bands like Nirvana, Dinosaur Jr, My Bloody Valentine and Buffalo Tom. I would liken Finger’s sound more to Dino Jr and Buffalo Tom, and fans of both of these bands will find Finger a welcome addition to their music catalog. What’s interesting is that Finger’s music sounds almost more relevant NOW than it may have back when they were actively trying to make it as a touring band.

Finger band-member Brad Rice has played guitar with Ryan Adams, Whiskeytown and Tift Merritt and the Backsliders over the past decade or so.

If nothing else, the opportunity to hear some of this long-out-of-print material by an overlooked band is worthy of compiling Still In Boxes 1990 – 1993. Do take the time to swing by Second Motion Records and check out the album and hear a few tracks.
